Product Description
Patriotism or practical joke?

Harrison, NH -- Ninth-grade student Philip Malloy was suspended from school for singing along to The Star-Spangled Banner in his homeroom, causing what his teacher, Margaret Narwin, called "a disturbance." But was he standing up for his patriotic ideals, only to be squelched by the school system? Was Ms. Narwin simply trying to be a good teacher? Or could it all be just a misunderstanding gone bad -- very bad? What is the truth here? Can it ever be known?

Heroism, hoax, or mistake, what happened at Harrison High changes everything for everyone in ways no one -- least of all Philip -- could have ever predicted.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing but the Truth   January 4, 2009
Nothing but the Truth
In the book Nothing but the Truth, I really enjoyed the use of different genres in the book. It made the book more interesting to read.
The many different genres that the author used are very interesting. Like the letters, phone conversations, memos etc. The genres helped bring the story to life in a unique way. For example the phone conversations made a picture in my head about the characters actually talking on the phone. The genres made the book much easier to understand what is going on at the time.
Although the use of multiple genres made the book more interesting and real, I didn't really enjoy the book. Especially, the main idea and the way the book ended. I felt like the author just made a random ending of the book that made the book uninteresting.
I find the idea of the main character, Philip Malloy, getting suspended for singing the national anthem not the best. The ending of the book also could've been better. I expected that the main character would have kept trying to improve his grades and qualify for the track team instead of quitting and going to a new school.
Since the main idea was not the best, the ending could've been better if it was totally different. The author could've just made the book longer with a little more details about the effort by the main character to be on the track team.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing But The Truth   December 19, 2008
Nothing But The Truth was a great book by Avi. I really liked the way Avi used different types of genres to express viewpoints from different characters. I also liked how Avi left the reader thing about what was going to happen next after each chapter. Avi uses great expression throughout that whole book leaving the reader diving in for more. Avi uses documentaries of different events to make this book different from any other book. Adding on to that, the viewpoints were greatly expressed through Philip Malloy's diary entry, Miss Narwin's letter to her sister, Anita and the memos of Harrison High School. It shows Philip's desire to get Miss Narwin angry. Even though the author didn't describe in details about the setting, you could see the vivid setting like a movie that is going through your head because of his exceptional use of the different genres. The author is very creative and does not incorporate a bias towards a certain side. It shows Philip Malloy's shouts and Miss Narwin's letter about what is happening in her life.
Something that I didn't like in the book was that the topics quickly changed. It starts out talking about the conversation between Margaret Narwin and Mr. Duval the reporter from St. Louis and then to the Harrison School Elections chart and then back to the conversation between Margaret Narwin and Robert Duval. This all happened within two pages of the book. The novel could have described each genre a little more and maybe what happened when Ted Griffen got elected to the school board. All in all, this book was really good.

5 out of 5 stars It's a book   November 24, 2008
I don't know what to say about this book. I bought it for my son per his teacher's request. Everyone had to purchase one. To date, they still haven't used it. I paid for the fast shipping and got it here fast! That's all I know to say about it for now. Maybe I'll read it and come back and review it again.
